| The Process |
As I mentioned before, we try to start with great songs and great arrangements. That happens only when a talented arranger is involved in the early stages of a project. For me, that is a critical call that we make depending on the style and needs of the project.
Todays studio technology, like Pro-Tools, allows for multiple production and recording techniques. Sometimes we track "live" with a full rhythm section, other times we use a half programmed-half live approach. It really just depends on what is best for that project or piece of music.
For stage shows and industrials we have learned that many clients aren't sure what they need until we actually build out an arrangement. With this in mind, we like to begin in the MIDI domain and get pre-approval on issues such as key, tempo, and form. We then send out Mp3s of rough tracks for approval. Many of our clients won't work any other way due to the flexibility this process offers.
At the end of a live show production we are also fully prepared to bring Pro-Tools directly to the venue and make any final mix or spacing changes right on the spot. We know that "show flow" is critical and cannot be fully determined until show run-throughs actually take place.
For live band projects we can accomodate any number of recording techniques. Many bands prefer to record everything "live" and then overdub vocals and additional instruments. No problem, we love live tracking. That's how it all began.
What ever the case, we try to use the production technique that will give our clients the opportunity to make critical changes and pre-approve each step of the production process.
